Human Skills and the Future of Jobs Report

Have you ever considered what the future workforce will look like?

What will the jobs at your place look like in fifty years time?

What skills will your workforce need?

What skills will you need to be providing?

Here at Skillpod we have been thinking about this a lot as browsing current research helps us to shape our support of learning and development for an unpredictable future. According to the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report, human skills are going to be a big deal in the future workforce.

But what are these human skills or soft skills or employability skills or people skills they're talking about?

Let's break these skills down into their parts:

Critical thinking. Means being able to analyse and evaluate things from different perspectives. It's like being a super detective, solving problems and making smart decisions. Being able to put those thinking caps on is going to be really valuable.

Problem-solving. This skill is all about finding creative solutions to tricky challenges. It's like being MacGyver, using whatever resources you have to fix things. So, you need to be ready to unleash your inner problem-solving guru.

Creativity. This one's all about thinking outside the box and coming up with fresh ideas. It's like being an artistic genius, but in the workplace. So, don't be afraid to let those creative juices flow!

Emotional intelligence is a biggie too. It's all about understanding and managing your own emotions, as well as being aware of other people's feelings. It's like having a built-in empathy radar. You need to be ready to connect with others on a deeper level.

Communication skills are going to be crucial too. It's not just about talking, but also listening and understanding. Being able to express yourself clearly and work well in teams will be a major plus.

Adaptability. The future is going to be full of changes, so being flexible and open to new things is going to be key. It's like being a chameleon, adapting to whatever situation comes your way.

While technological advancements and automation continue to reshape the workforce, human skills are becoming even more highly valuable and sought after. These skills complement technological capabilities and provide a unique advantage in areas that require emotional intelligence, critical thinking, creativity, and ethical decision-making.

Developing human skills is an ongoing process that requires dedication, practice, and a willingness to learn and grow. By combining formal education, practical experience, self-directed learning, and feedback, individuals can enhance their skill sets and adapt to the changing demands of the workforce.

So reflecting on these human skills, when was the last time you consciously developed them? Have you considered how developing these skills will contribute to individual and business productivity and success at your workplace?
